Where is Lamu?
At Be Social Project, our impact begins on the ground, working closely with families, teachers, and local teams across Lamu County, in northern Kenya.
Lamu County is made up of a group of islands and a mainland area, making it a region of great cultural and geographical diversity. With an approximate population of 145,000 people, local communities rely mainly on fishing, agriculture, and small-scale trade.
Limited resources, restricted access to education and healthcare, and insufficient nutrition remain major challenges—but they are also the starting point of our work.
On the mainland lies Mokowe, home to Lamu Special School, the first school we partnered with and the place where our project was born..
The island has some crucial problems:
of inhabitants
live below the poverty line
of children
suffer from malnutrition
of children
do not go to school
For Be Social Project, Mokowe represents both the challenges and the hopes of Lamu County: a place where solidarity, education, and inclusion can transform realities and open up opportunities for children with special needs.
In addition to Lamu Special School in Mokowe, we also collaborate with other schools that share this mission, where we continue to promote support and development projects:
