Chundwa School
Chundwa Primary School is located in Faza, one of the islands in Lamu County, Kenya, where access is challenging due to the limited availability of public transportation.
Reaching the school by traditional means involves a boat journey of more than five hours, departing very early from Lamu, which makes communication and ongoing follow-up with the educational community difficult. The fastest alternative is a private speedboat, which reduces the journey to less than an hour; however, its high cost limits the frequency of visits.
Chundwa Primary School: Education and Educational Support on Faza Island, Lamu
How we started working together
Despite the logistical challenges, our collaboration with Chundwa Primary School focuses on improving students’ educational experience and supporting teachers. One of the main initiatives is the creation of a didactic play corner within the classroom, designed to stimulate interactive and creative learning.
In addition, teachers receive specialized training at Lamu Special School, where they learn how to use educational materials and resources effectively. Be Social Project covers their transportation, meals, and accommodation in Mokowe. To maintain a strong and ongoing connection, visits are planned at least three times a year, aligned with each school term—either they travel to us or we travel to them. During these visits, we provide new educational and art materials, ensuring that students have access to tools that foster both their academic and creative development.
The work carried out at Chundwa Primary School is an example of how educational support and teacher training can overcome the challenges of a remote island, promoting inclusive and high-quality education in some of the most isolated communities in Lamu County.
