Aridzone School
Aridzone School: Inclusive education for children with hearing disabilities
Aridzone is a primary and junior secondary school located a few kilometers from Mokowe, in Lamu County, Kenya.
The institution stands out for its strong commitment to inclusive education, offering a special unit dedicated to children with hearing disabilities. This unit currently serves 21 students, aged 7 to 15, and aims to ensure that each student receives educational support tailored to their individual needs.
At Aridzone, all general classes are taught by a single teacher, which represents a significant challenge in adequately meeting the needs of all students. To help strengthen the quality of education, Be Social Project began collaborating with the school in early 2025.
The first step was to reinforce education for children with hearing disabilities. To achieve this, Shindo, a qualified special education professional, joined the school as a teaching assistant. Thanks to his involvement, classes can now be split by age group, ensuring that each student receives the attention they need.
Shindo is primarily responsible for teaching core subjects such as mathematics, physics, and social studies, adapting the content to each student’s abilities. In addition, three times a week he teaches art classes, combining his educational background with his work as an artist, thereby encouraging creativity and personal expression among students. We have also partitioned the classrooms to allow for smaller groups to work in two separate learning environments.
Be Social Project also supports the school through the purchase of both art supplies and general school materials.
Be Social Project’s collaboration with Aridzone reflects a model of inclusive education in Kenya, where children with hearing disabilities have the opportunity to develop both academically and artistically in a safe and stimulating environment. This initiative is an example of how adapted education can transform lives and promote equal opportunities in communities like Lamu.
