Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Project

Hello everyone!

We are starting 2023 at Be Social Project full of energy and happiness because… we have already raised all the funds needed to launch the physiotherapy and rehabilitation project at Mokowe School in Lamu!

This has been possible thanks to everyone who has collaborated—whether through our charity markets, yoga classes, or simply by contributing to the crowdfunding campaign. We are incredibly grateful to be able to count on your continued support. Asante Sana!

We are already taking the first steps to begin the physiotherapy and rehabilitation work as soon as possible, as well as identifying where we can purchase the necessary materials.

Before that, we would like to explain in more detail what this project will involve. It is structured in three phases.

1. Prosthetics or orthotics and follow-up care

Just over a month ago, taking advantage of the doctors’ visit, Joseph—the orthopaedist who is handling Abderramán’s case (which we shared in a previous post and which marked the beginning of the collaboration between Be Social Project and Mokowe School for the Mentally Disabled)—visited us again.

On this occasion, Joseph assessed all the children who might require prosthetics or orthotics and determined that four children urgently need them: Sebastián, Damaris, Omar and Suleiman. Joseph has already taken their measurements and is currently working on the prototypes.

As there are now five children who require prosthetics, it is more practical for Joseph to travel to the school facilities to carry out the follow-up assessments. We would cover his transport and accommodation. This phase has an estimated cost of €1,622 over one year.

2. Gym

This summer, we began working on adapting a classroom that had previously been empty so that it can become the new space where our children can exercise and carry out their rehabilitation. In addition to providing them with sportswear (as most of them do not have any), the gym will be equipped with all the necessary equipment and materials to support their physical and mental development.

Through this space, we will work on endurance, psychomotor skills, strength, mobility, coordination, balance and perception.

Remaining total cost: €1,899

3. Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Service

At the moment, changes are taking place in Lamu County and, although we cannot access these services for free, there is now a physiotherapy programme available that we can join by paying a fee—something that feels like a dream, as it was unthinkable before.

In addition, we have a team of physiotherapists in Spain who will support us by providing guidance on basic stretching routines and by holding online sessions.

Total cost for one year: €2,602

Next steps for Be Social Project

Now that the nutrition programme with which we began this collaboration is well established and we have been able to see its positive results, our focus is on launching the physiotherapy and rehabilitation project as soon as possible. This will allow the children at Mokowe School in Lamu to start improving their physical wellbeing without delay.

We will keep you informed of all progress through our newsletter and Instagram—don’t forget to follow us!
